Andy and Sue's Concert Ratings - from Friday, September 3, 2010
First ever concert between Andy and Sue Krajewski, and first ever concert outside of the Coventry household.
| Andy | Powerman 5000 - Free | 80 | guitar rift was catchy and powerful, definitely can see why that song was one of their most famous |
| Sue | Elliott Smith - No Life (demo) | 90 | Musically, it's one of his most engaging sounds. Even though it's just a demo, I actually enjoyed it more than his other more acoustic efforts. Vocally isn't remarkably catchy (though I don't usually think they are), the sounds of this and the summery guitar riffs add to its charm. |
| Andy | 90 | less-pretentious than other surfan songs, which made me like it. It actually talked about something persona, sometimes his songs can be impersonal (e.g. about cities or regions or things like that). The ending was a little incongruous with the rest of the song, but it definitely was unique. Overall an enjoyable song! | |
| Sue | Liars - Mister You're on Fire, Mister! | 94 | This is obviosuly more put together than the Elliott Smith song but that's to be expected as this isn't a demo. Surprisingly fun and beat-driven song, I love the rhythm! There are some hints of cheesy-indie rock (aka Franz Ferdinand), but I'm sure the sarcastic, dark lyricism in this song means something more menacing. Good stuff! |
| Andy | Aphex - Analog Bubble Bath | 94 | I really enjoyed that song---I always am interested in electronic music, and it was refreshing that the song wasn't too long, as a lot of electronic music is. It was a bit repetitive, but electronic instrumentals often run that risk. There were good subtle changes throughout the song that helped to prevent the song from becoming too repetitive. |
| Sue | MC Solaar - Le Nouvau Western | 92 | Way to pull a style out of left field. The beat in this is phat and I liked it a lot. Since it's in another language, that decreases its impact but you know what? It's a straight hip hop song so it doesn't really matter anyways. Cool rhythm, sleasy vocals-- this was a fun song! Minus points for the stoppages. |
| Andy | Sebadoh - Brand New Love | 91 | The guitar was really good, especially at the end. Good use of drums and guitar-playing, it was very closely synced with the song! I liked the song upon first listen, however it does not seem like a song that has the best replay value. |
| Sue | The Dresden Dolls - Girl Anacrynism | 98 | Two things: it's a good thing I know the song already and two, that was your best performance of the night! Musically it actually has some substance with the wild, though delicate, piano playing. The lyrics if heard on first listen could be tossed off, but listen closer reveals that she is witty and smart. A bit on the pretensious side (we won't go there with her) but this song is and always has been entertaining. That's for sure. |
| Andy | Pulp - Disco 2000 | 94 | Performance was really good, matched very well with the song. The vocals were probably the best part of the song, they are unique enough to make the song memorable. The lyrics are a little "what you see is what you get", with little room for interpretation. |
| Sue | Portishead - Cowboys | 94 | Weird factor is knotched way up in this. The beat is textured and quite errie, as are the vocals. They make these creepy atmospheres that would fit perfect at a Halloween party. Musical substance and atmosphere are ace in this song. The weird factor can hurt its replay value a touch. |
| Andy | Daniel Johnston - I Lose | 96 | Pleasantly surprised with this one! Daniel Johnston songs can be hard to get into, but this one didn't feel like that - it was more produced and more accessible. The chorus was very catchy! Great last song. |
| Sue | Bent - Beautiful Otherness | 98 | This song never ceases to put me in a trance. The rhythm is so hypnotic and catchy. The vocals are also very soothing and wonderful. The performance was top-notch and really matched the song in a special way. This was a perfect ender to our first concert ever-- I enjoyed it! |
